The body's movement system extends beyond the musculoskeletal system to include all layers and all systems of the body.  All tissues are normally pliable.  All connective tissues are visco-elastic to varying degrees.  An area of reduced mobility requires the body to adapt and compensate, which it does in the best way it is able.

However, when the body runs out of capacity to adapt, it will be expressed in some form of dysfunction or discomfort.  The body first protects the central nervous system, circulation and viscera (organs), offloading mechanical strain to the more robust musculoskeletal system - which is where injuries, aches, and pains usually come to our attention.

Most musculo-skeletal problems have a visceral &/or cranial element which, if not addressed, are more likely to persist or recur.

Visceral Manipulation (VM) restores normal movement to the body's organs - in relationship to each other, and to the body wall.  VM could just as easily be called "Organ Specific Fascia Mobilisation".  Visceral Manipulation is a gentle and precise manual therapy based on the anatomy of human movement.

A treatment will first address the place that your body is having most difficulty compensating, and in turn how it relates to the rest of your body.  This at first may or may not be at the site of your symptom/s - rather the place that is creating or perpetuating the problem.

As an example - neck and shoulder pain due to rib cage stiffness, which in turn is a compensation for the Liver & Stomach not gliding freely against each other, limiting diaphragm and breath, and which may also lend itself to reflux and indigestion.  Treatment would begin with VM to restore normal gliding to the Liver & Stomach.

Additionally, Visceral Manipulation helps to  improve body-mind harmony by normalising information exchange & feedback loops between the body and brain. Advanced VM techniques work directly with the nervous system.

By addressing restrictions in deeper layers of the body which affect movement and function, Visceral Manipulation is able to help with a wide range of problems, including:

  • Acute Musculoskeletal Pain  - Whiplash, Seat belt Injuries, Chest or Abdominal Sports Injuries
  • Chronic Musculoskeletal Problems - Somatic-Visceral Interactions, Chronic Spinal Dysfunction, Headaches and Migraines, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Peripheral Joint Pain, Sciatica
  • Digestive Disorders - Bloating and Constipation, Nausea and Acid Reflux, GORD
  • Women's and Men's Health Issues - Chronic Pelvic Pain, Endometriosis, Dysmenorrhea, Bladder Incontinence, Prostate Dysfunction, Effects of Menopause
  • Pain Related to - Post-operative Scar Tissue, Post-infection Scar Tissue, Autonomic Mechanisms
  • Emotional Issues - Anxiety and Depression, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder

Visceral Mobilisation has been developed over the last 30 years by French Osteopath Jean Pierre Barral.  It is taught extensively in Europe, UK & USA.

I have completed the Barral Institute's Visceral Manipulation series - Abdomen 1 & 2, Pelvis, Thorax, Manual Thermal Evaluation and Viscero-Emotional Integration. The Barral Institute offers a range of other wonderful classes that I attend when I can, including: Vascular Upper & Lower body, Trauma & the Neuro-Meningeal system, Brain, Spine & Joint  and other advanced coursework.
